Every sound on this page is made from the noise colours. Rain is a brown-noise body with a high-passed layer on top for the patter. Ocean is brown noise moved slowly through a filter, about ten waves a minute. A fan is brown noise through a resonant filter with a gentle pulse. Thunder is the rain engine with low rumbles rolled underneath at random intervals.
That is not a technicality — it is why they work. What makes a sound easy to sleep through is that it is broadband and carries no information you need to act on, and the colours are the purest form of that. Nature sounds add texture on top, which some people find warmer and others find distracting.

Are nature sounds better than white noise for sleep?
Not better, different. Nature sounds vary over time, which many people find more pleasant and less clinical. That variation is also their weakness for masking: every dip in volume — between waves, between gusts — lets other noise through. A steady colour like brown noise masks more consistently.
Which nature sound is closest to a noise colour?
